The parts of the jaw
Your jaw is a set of bones that holds your teeth:
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Maxilla (upper jaw) | holds your top teeth; doesn't move; supports muscles for chewing and facial expression |
| Mandible (lower jaw) | holds your lower teeth; moves when you talk or chew |
| Temporomandibular joints (TMJs) | two joints, one on each side, connecting the mandible to your skull |
What can go wrong
- Fractures: broken bones.
- Dislocations: joint injuries that force the bone ends out of position.
- Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs): conditions affecting the TMJs.
- Osteonecrosis: blood flow to part of the bone is cut off, and the bone can break down.
- Tumors: benign (not cancer) or cancer.
- Jaw defects: birth defects in which the jaw may be missing or misshapen.
Diagnosis and treatment
Imaging tests are often used to diagnose jaw problems. Treatment depends on which problem you have.
