Mercury is an element found in air, water and soil, in several forms.
- Metallic mercury is a shiny, silvery-white, odourless liquid; heated, it becomes a colourless, odourless gas.
- Mercury also combines with other elements to form powders or crystals.
Where it is used
Mercury is in many products and is used in many industries:
- glass thermometers;
- silver dental fillings;
- button batteries;
- mercury salts in some skin creams and ointments.
How it reaches people
Mercury in the air settles into water. From there it can pass up the food chain and build up in fish, shellfish and the animals that eat fish.
Health effects
The nervous system is sensitive to all forms of mercury. Exposure to high levels can damage the brain and kidneys, and a pregnant woman can pass mercury in her body to her baby.
Protecting your family
- Handle and dispose of mercury-containing products carefully.
- Eat less of the fish that are higher in mercury.
