NASA’s vision for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is to map out a safe, accessible, and affordable new air transportation system alongside industry partners and the FAA. An important aspect of AAM is the development of automated systems and operation, which will allow vehicles to fly safer and more efficient. In this episode of NASA's Advanced Air Mobility Playbook, Deputy Project Manager of Technology Kenneth Goodrich explains some of the research and key components of automation. https://www.nasa.gov/centers/armstrong/features/aam-looks-toward-automation.html
What is said in the film
advanced air mobility or aam is nasa's vision for a new air travel capability enabled by small aircraft one area the nasa aam team is working on is automation autonomy for aam is the use of integrated hardware and software to be able to make the aircraft essentially be able to fly itself so it'll be able to see and plan around any hazards that are in the area and just help ensure that the flight is safe and effective autonomy is using technology to perform things that typically an expert pilot would use today our goal is to complement what the pilot does through the use of technology to make their job simpler that first starts with analysis so being able to prove through mathematics or computer simulation that the concepts are working as designed the second part is providing the methods or pathways for being able to certify that those technologies are safe autonomy is already enabling activities on small unmanned aircraft so for example automated package delivery which several companies are currently testing in a prototype stage longer term we envision air taxis that would be able to pick up and carry people without any pilot on board would be a remote supervisor on the ground that's overseeing the operation but the onboard execution of the flight could be done strictly by the vehicle in its systems
