Phillis Wheatley (Phillis Peters): A Critical Attempt and a Bibliography of Her Writings

Hardcover book, Phillis Wheatley (Phillis Peters): A Critical Attempt and a Bibliography of Her Writings by Charles Frederick Heartman, published for the author in New York in 1915. Title page states there were 99 copies printed for the author, but following page lists copy is 25 of 91 copies printed. Title is "Heartman's Historical Series No. 7," translated to English from the original German by a translator. Author foreward notes his disappointment with the quality of the translation. Book contains facsimiles of newspaper items and pages from Wheatley Peters' publications. Frontispiece portrait of Phillis Wheatley, attributed to Scipio Moorhead, depicts her in profile facing proper right seated at a desk holding a quill to paper in her right hand. Her left hand is raised to her face in thought. Head of the book's spine has been abraded and lost part of the boards and textblock. Paper on interior contains water mark that reads "ALEXANDRA JAPAN," text block has yellowed along edge.
