Portraits of Garfield's six doctors surround an illustration of the President on his sickbed

ELBERON, N. J.,

September 17, 1881.

6 P. M.

At the examination of the President at 12 m. to-day the temperature was 100.2°; pulse, 120; respiration, 24.

At 11.30 he had a severe chill, lasting half an hour, followed by perspiration. Since the noon examination there has been a gradual fall of temperature, with diminished frequency of pulse and respiration, so that at the evening examination the temperature was 98°; pulse, 102; respiration, 18.

He has slept most of the time during the afternoon and has taken his nourishment at proper intervals. The cough has been less frequent than usual.

D. W. BLISS,

D. HAYES AGNEW.

This post is one of a series reenacting the official bulletins released to the public by the physicians to President Garfield during his illness after the shooting on July 2, 1881.
