Student Vets: Translate Service Skills into Employment

Veterans often tell me they’re worried their military experience won’t be appreciated in the civilian world. It can be difficult to translate skills and experience that may appear to be irrelevant to, say, an office job. As a result, Veterans may leave their military stint off their résumé, or downplay their individual accomplishments and abilities. A recent news story suggests Veterans possess the skill they need, but they might not be adept in explaining them to employers.

To help combat this issue, the folks at Google have partnered with Student Veterans of America to host free résumé and networking workshops for student Veterans at 10 cities across the country this month. Every student Vet will be paired 1-on-1 with a Google employee for half a day of résumé and networking advice. Not only will lunch be provided, but the event is entirely free to student Veterans. Each workshop will be at the city’s Google office, with the exception of Charleston, which will be at The Citadel. The events are close to capacity, but the workshops below still need more Vets in Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, and Washington.

All events run from 9AM-2PM:

Ann Arbor, Michigan – 6/12 – 1 spot

Austin, Texas – 6/13 – 7 spots

Charleston, South Carolina (at The Citadel) – 6/7 – 2 spots

Seattle, Washington – 6/14 – 2 spots

You’d be hard-pressed to find an opportunity for folks to give expertise away from free, so take advantage of this if you can. And if you sign up, please make the event; this is only possible due to the generosity of Google and SVA to help student Vets succeed in the workplace.
