Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the umbrella term for three causes of death in babies:

CauseICD-9 codeICD-10 code
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)798.0R95
Unknown cause799.9R99
Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB)E913.0W75

Deaths are classified by underlying cause, using ICD-9 codes for 1984–1998 and ICD-10 for 1999–2024.

CDC tracks U.S. SUID rates by cause from 1990 to 2024, using National Center for Health Statistics mortality data and its CDC WONDER tool.

The 1990s brought steep declines, following three milestones:

  1. 1992 — the American Academy of Pediatrics issued safe sleep recommendations.
  2. 1994 — the Back to Sleep campaign began.
  3. 1996 — the Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation Reporting Form was released.

Since 2020, the rate has been rising. In 2024, SUID claimed 93.6 deaths per 100,000 live births.
