The National Park Service's Teaching with Historic Places program uses real places — in national parks and on the National Register of Historic Places — to teach history, social studies, geography and civics. For women's history in World War II, it offers six ready-made lessons, each built around a place where women's wartime work actually happened.
Six lessons
| Lesson | Format | What students explore |
|---|---|---|
| Women Cryptographers in the Navy | Hour History | Navy WAVES stationed in Dayton, Ohio, who built the code-breaking machines called bombes |
| Learning from Women in Aviation | Curiosity Kit | women aviators, including military pilots of the war |
| The Cadet Nurse Corps | Hour History | the wartime program that trained student nurses |
| Hanford Site Workers in the Tri-Cities | Heritage City | women at the Hanford Site, and how their contributions — and how people saw them — changed over time |
| Women's Sexual Health and Safety in WWII | Hour History | women's sexual health and safety on the American home front |
| Women and the Pensacola Vocational School | Heritage City | the Florida school that trained home-front war workers, many of them women |

What the formats mean
- Hour History — a lesson built to fit one class period.
- Heritage City — a lesson rooted in one city's wartime story.
- Curiosity Kit — a set of sources and activities for students to investigate on their own.

Training for home-front war work, the subject of the Pensacola lesson.

These lessons are part of the NPS feature on Women in World War II. Teaching with Historic Places also collects lessons on World War II generally and on military and wartime history, and its full lesson plan library is searchable.
