Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, in Virginia about 13 km (8 mi) west of Washington, D.C., is the first and only national park devoted to the performing arts. Beneath its stages lies a slice of the Piedmont's long geologic history.

The park

RenamedAugust 21, 2002
Sizeabout 52 hectares (130 acres)
Land given byCatherine Filene Shouse, researcher and philanthropist, who wanted to bring a wide range of performing arts to the people of the National Capital area

Its three venues:

  • the Filene Center, a leading open-air arts pavilion hosting internationally known performers against the rolling hills and woods along Wolf Trap Creek;
  • the Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods, an outdoor amphitheater introducing children to the performing arts;
  • the Meadow Pavilion, for smaller shows.

Vein quartzPaleozoicmany bodies cutting the metasediments; large quartz blocks mapped near the creek

Maps and reports

The NPS Geologic Resources Inventory, which has produced geologic maps and reports for more than 270 parks, has mapped Wolf Trap, and a Soil Resources Inventory has been completed. Both are on the NPS DataStore.
