The temple built to fulfil a prophecy, and the sharks that still circle it

The park asks four questions, and each one is literal rather than rhetorical.

How many places in America can you walk in the footsteps of a king? The
temple here was built by Kamehameha I, who went on to unite the Hawaiian
Islands under a single rule.

**Where else has a stranded sailor risen to become a great chief over an
entire island?** That story belongs to this coast too.

**Where else can you experience the culminating event of a people, foretold
from centuries past?** Puʻukoholā Heiau was raised in fulfilment of a
prophecy: build the temple, and rule over all of Hawaiʻi would follow. It
was, and it did — which makes this ground the hinge of the islands' political
history rather than a monument beside it.

**Where else can you stand on a beach and watch sharks pass over a submerged
temple?** There is a second heiau offshore, underwater, and the sharks above
it are visible from the sand.

Visiting

The park is open daily, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Weather is typically **hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures in the upper
80s**. Morning and late afternoon are the best times, when it is cooler —
and on a site that is largely open ground, that is practical advice rather
than a preference.

The park or the trail occasionally closes because of high winds or
dangerous storm conditions. Check with the visitor centre or your hotel for
advisories on the day.

Getting there

From Keahole (Kona) International Airport — about a **32-minute drive,
27.5 miles**:

1. East on Keahole Airport Rd
2. Left at the traffic light onto HI-19
3. Follow HI-19 for 26.1 miles to Spencer Beach Park Rd
4. Left onto HI-270 (0.4 mi)
5. Left onto Spencer Beach Park Rd (0.3 mi)
6. The destination is the second right
