Map of Western Australia's coast showing five colored assessment units from the Perth Basin to the Bonaparte Gulf

The five conventional assessment units in four geologic provinces of Western Australia. USGS map.

The estimate

Using a geology-based assessment method, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the undiscovered, technically recoverable conventional oil and gas of four geologic provinces of Western Australia — the Perth Basin, NW Shelf, Browse Basin and Bonaparte Gulf Basin — with fully risked means of:

ResourceMeanRange (F95–F5)
Oil906 million barrels (0.9 billion)594 to 1,300 million barrels
Gas132,837 billion cubic feet (132.8 trillion)76,942 to 203,932 billion cubic feet
Natural gas liquids2,508 million barrels (2.5 billion)1,436 to 3,877 million barrels

F95 means a 95-percent chance of at least the amount shown; F5 is defined the same way.

Of the gas, about 81 percent — 108,393 billion cubic feet — is estimated to lie in the NW Shelf Province.

The geology

The source rocks along Australia's western continental margin reflect its tectonic history: Permian lake and marine shales, Permian coals and carbonaceous shales, Triassic marine shales, Jurassic coals and carbonaceous shales, and Cretaceous marine shales. Buried under as much as 6 kilometers of sediment along the margin, most of them now lie in the thermal gas window — though maturity, thickness and quality vary in complex ways across this vast, structured margin.

Because the geology varies and the geochemistry of the several possible source rocks is unevenly understood, the USGS defined five composite total petroleum systems in the four provinces, with five assessment units drawn to take in that variability.
