The rocks

The three sites lie in the Valley and Ridge province of eastern New York, on bedrock made entirely of Ordovician sedimentary and metasedimentary rock:

FormationWhereRock
Austin Glen Formationunder the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vanderbilt Mansion, and also at Val-Killgreywacke, turbidites, shale (mudstone) and sandstone — the rock that holds up the scenic bluffs above the Hudson
Stuyvesant Falls Formationthe eastern part of the Eleanor Roosevelt site, near Top Cottagesiltstone, silty dolostone and quartzite

Ice Age

During the Pleistocene, glaciers advanced and retreated across New York, planing down the land and leaving loose glacial till over the bedrock — which gives the sites their rolling hills and low ridges.

Maps and reports

The NPS Geologic Resources Inventory products for the site are in the NPS DataStore, along with a completed Soil Resources Inventory. The regional story is in the NPS guide to the Valley and Ridge province.
