Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers: Ebola, Marburg, Lassa and Yellow Fever

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are illnesses caused by four families of viruses, including the Ebola, Marburg, Lassa fever and yellow fever viruses. See also Ebola.

What they have in common

  • They affect many organs.
  • They damage blood vessels.
  • They impair the body's ability to regulate itself.

Some cause mild illness; others, such as Ebola and Marburg, cause severe disease and death.

Where they occur

VHFs are found around the world, but each disease is usually limited to where the animals that carry it live. Lassa fever, for example, is confined to rural West Africa, where rats and mice carry the virus.

Risk

  • Travelers: the risk is low, but avoid areas with outbreaks.
  • Bioterrorism: some of these infections have no effective treatment, which raises concern about their use in bioterrorism.
