We Shall Overcome is a travel itinerary of places connected with the modern civil rights movement — with a few exceptions, the events after World War II, and especially the 1950s and 1960s. It became part of the African American Civil Rights Network in October 2019.

What it covers

FocusThe African American freedom struggle. It doesn't cover the equality efforts of other groups, such as Asian, Hispanic or Native Americans
Properties49 places listed in the National Register of Historic Places, nominated by the states over the years
LimitsNot a complete list of civil rights sites: some important places haven't yet been recognized by National Register listing, and the list isn't the result of a systematic survey

Who made it

The itinerary was a joint project of the National Park Service, part of the Department of the Interior, and the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. Both agencies have formally recognized the importance of the 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery march:

  • Congress designated, and the Park Service administers, the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail, for the route's national significance in American history.
  • The Federal Highway Administration designated the march route an All-American Road.

The African American Civil Rights Network

Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017 and coordinated by the National Park Service, the African American Civil Rights Network recognizes the civil rights movement and the sacrifices of those who fought discrimination and segregation. It tells the movement's stories — its people, places and events — through a collection of public and private sites and resources.
