Wright Brothers National Memorial, in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, marks the spot where the first successful controlled powered flight took place in 1903. It covers 173 hectares (428 acres) of some of the youngest land in the national park system.

August 10, 1933transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service
December 1, 1953renamed Wright Brothers National Memorial

Young ground

The memorial sits on the North Carolina barrier islands, which are geologically very young — their history lies within the Cenozoic Era, the past 66 million years. The oldest known parts of the Outer Banks, including the stretch across the mouth of Albemarle Sound where the memorial stands, formed less than 3,000 years ago.

The memorial shares its geologic story with Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site: a story of relative sea level rising and falling in cycles. The underlying geologic framework controls what sediment reaches today's islands and how they respond to natural and human forces.

The memorial is part of the Coastal Plain physiographic province, and shares its geology with a region reaching far beyond the park.
