Deciding ahead of time
What medical care would you want if you were too ill or injured to say? Advance directives are legal documents that let you set out your decisions about end-of-life care in advance. They tell your family, friends and health care professionals what you want, and help avoid confusion later.
You can accept or refuse medical care.
The two main documents
| Document | What it does |
|---|---|
| Living will | says which treatments you want if you are dying or permanently unconscious |
| Durable power of attorney for health care | names your health care proxy — someone you trust to make health decisions for you if you can't |
What to think about including
Your instructions might cover:
- dialysis and breathing machines;
- whether you want to be resuscitated if your breathing or heartbeat stops;
- tube feeding;
- organ or tissue donation.
