Croup is inflammation of the vocal cords (the larynx) and the windpipe (the trachea). It makes breathing difficult and causes a barking cough and a hoarse voice.
Causes
Croup is usually caused by a virus, most often a parainfluenza virus. Allergies and reflux can also cause it.
How it develops
Croup often begins like an ordinary cold. Then the vocal cords and windpipe swell, which brings on the hoarseness and the cough. A child may also have:
- a fever;
- high-pitched, noisy sounds when breathing.
Symptoms are usually worse at night and last about three to five days.
Who gets it
- Age. Children between 6 months and 3 years old are the most likely to get croup, and they may have more severe symptoms.
- Season. Croup is more common in the fall and winter.
Treatment and when to worry
Most cases of viral croup are mild and can be looked after at home.
In rare cases croup becomes serious and interferes with a child's breathing. If you are worried about your child's breathing, call your health care provider right away.
