How it was measured

  • The survey: the National Health Interview Survey, household interviews with a sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. population (the Sample Adult component), 2017–2018.
  • The question: adults who had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had asthma were asked, "Do you still have asthma?"
  • Age adjustment: percentages are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. Census standard population, using age groups 18–44, 45–64, 65–74 and 75 and older.
  • Groups: non-Hispanic categories include only people who chose one racial group; Hispanic people may be of any race. The totals include all adults 18 and older.
