At its October 2024 meeting, the **Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices** approved the **Recommended Immunization Schedule for Adults Aged
19 Years or Older, United States, 2025** — a consolidated summary of current
ACIP recommendations for adult vaccination.
Who stands behind it
Recommended by ACIP and approved by the CDC, plus:
- American College of Physicians
- American Academy of Family Physicians
- American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
- American College of Nurse-Midwives
- American Academy of Physician Associates
- American Pharmacists Association
- Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America
Eight organisations, covering essentially everyone who vaccinates an adult in
the United States. The schedule works because it is one document rather than
eight.
And one sentence that gets overlooked: **ACIP vaccine recommendations do not
establish mandates.**
What changed for 2025
Vaccine-specific updates for **COVID-19, influenza, meningococcal serogroup B,
pneumococcal conjugate, and RSV** vaccines.
Influenza vaccines changed from quadrivalent to trivalent throughout the
schedule, matching the products the FDA approved for the 2024–25 season.
Inactivated polio vaccine was added to the tables. Clarifications in the
notes for hepatitis B, mpox, and Tdap.
How to read it
Use all parts together — the cover page, tables, notes, appendix and
addendum. The addendum is where new or updated recommendations made
between annual updates are summarised, which is what keeps a yearly document
current in a field that changes mid-year.
What sits behind a recommendation
ACIP develops each one after in-depth review of **disease epidemiology and
societal impacts, vaccine efficacy and effectiveness, vaccine safety, quality
of evidence, feasibility of programme implementation, impact on health equity,
and economic analyses.**
Safety does not stop at approval: **routinely recommended vaccines are
monitored by the CDC and the FDA through multiple surveillance systems, safety
studies and literature review.**
