The National Diabetes Statistics Report is the standing federal account of
diabetes in the United States, covering prevalence and incidence, risk
factors, complications, deaths and costs. It is continually updated, and it
exists because a law requires it — the **Catalyst to Better Diabetes Care Act
of 2009**.
The numbers, smallest to largest

Prediabetes is nearly three times as common as diabetes itself.
The figure that reframes old age
31.3 million people aged 65 or over have prediabetes — 52.1% of them.
More than half of Americans over 65 are in the stage before type 2 diabetes.
That is not a risk group within a population; it is the population.
It also sets the scale of what "prevention" would have to mean. Preventing
type 2 diabetes at a national level is not an intervention aimed at a minority
with a warning sign — it is an intervention aimed at the majority of older
adults and roughly a third of all adults.
And the quarter who do not know
27.6% of adults with diabetes are undiagnosed — 11 million people. They
are not managing a condition they have, and the complications diabetes
produces work silently in the meantime.
Put the two headline figures together and the shape of the problem is clear:
11 million people with the disease and no diagnosis, and 115 million with the
warning sign and, for most of them, no awareness of it either.
