Order for printing of 1c and 2c stamp

Letter ordering printing of 1c and 2c stamp; written July 30, 1884, from Hawaiian Postmaster General Whitney to the American Bank Note Company:

"The Hawaiian Post-Office Department requires a new supply of the following denominations and colors:

18 pkgs. of 1 cent (Likelike) in light green: [stamp affixed at right]

2 [pkgs. of] same stamp in blue: [stamp affixed at right]

50 pkgs. of 2 cent Kalakaua, bright carmine: (pencil notation: rose tint 80) [British stamp of desired color affixed at right]

20 pkgs. of 5 cent Kamehameha V, light blue: [stamp affixed at right]

5 pkgs. of 10 cents Kalakaua, light brown: [French postage due? stamp of desired color affixed at right]

You will observe that the color of two of the stamps (2c and 10cts) is to [be] changed from the last issue. The bright carmine red of the new British stamp affixed is desired, even if the ink should cost more than the dull red last used.

The gum on the last two batches printed of the 2c has caused some complaints, fully five percent of these stamps not adhering while all the other stamps adhere well. We have thought it may be owing to the quality of the paper or to some action on it by the ink, neutralizing the adhesive quality of the gum.

For the 10 cent stamp the color used on the French stamp is preferred, but if that shade is not obtainable, the darker British sample will answer.

These goods may be shipped by steamer via Panama, insured for cost and charges, to care of Messrs. Williams, Dimond and Co. San Francisco, to be by them shipped to Honolulu by first vessel. (steam or sail.)

Respectfully Yours

H. M. Whitney,

P.M.G."
