Students Release Their Salmon Virtually

Students from L. C. Hunt and Edmunds Middle Schools released the salmon they raised from egg in their classrooms – by video. Teachers Lee Slocum Orlando and Matt Chandler transported the fry to Joiner Brook, a tributary to the Winooski River, to let them free. Lee and Matt have been educating students for over 20+ years on the environment through the Adopt-A-Salmon Program. The program introduces students to salmon ecology and the importance of river ecosystems. Students learn about the ecological health of rivers and effects of human impacts on migratory fish and other aquatic species. Schools received salmon eggs to be reared in classroom incubators. Throughout the winter and spring, students monitored eggs until they hatched. In late spring, fry were released into the Winooski River watershed. Unfortunately, this year due to the Corvid 19 pandemic, students were unable to stock their fry in person. However, do not despair, technology to the rescue.
