From 2000 to 2018, the three most common methods of suicide in the United States, for both males and females, were firearms, suffocation and poisoning. In 2018 these three accounted for 34,915 suicides among males (92.5% of all male suicides) and 9,594 among females (90.7%). The trends, as age-adjusted rates per 100,000 people:

Poisoning was the only one of the three to decline in recent years. Throughout the period, males had higher suicide rates than females for every method, and the gap was widest for firearms.
The figures come from the National Vital Statistics System's mortality data. Rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population, and the methods are defined by International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes X72–X74 (firearm), X70 (suffocation) and X60–X69 (poisoning).
