Cost keeps many Americans from getting the dental care they need. A QuickStats chart from CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, published in MMWR, shows who went without in 2017, based on the National Health Interview Survey.

Bar chart of the percentage of U.S. adults who needed but couldn't afford dental care in 2017, by sex, race and Hispanic origin.

Age-adjusted percentage of adults who needed dental care in the past 12 months but didn't get it because of cost, 2017 (CDC/NCHS).

The findings

Women were more likely than men to go without dental care they needed because they couldn't afford it — 12.7% versus 8.8% — and that held true within every racial and ethnic group shown.

Hispanic adults were the most likely to have unmet dental needs because of cost, among both women and men:

WomenMen
Hispanicnearly 17%12.3%
Non-Hispanic Black12.8%8.6%
Non-Hispanic White11.8%8.3%

About the data

  • The question asked: "During the past 12 months, was there any time when you needed any of the following but didn't get it because you couldn't afford it: Dental care (including check-ups)?" People who didn't know or refused to answer were excluded.
  • Estimates come from household interviews of a sample of civilian, noninstitutionalized U.S. adults, age-adjusted to the projected 2000 U.S. population.
  • Hispanic adults may be of any race; the other groups include non-Hispanic adults who chose one race, and not all groups are shown.
