The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History — known as The Wright — is in Detroit, Michigan. Its aim is to open minds and change lives by exploring and celebrating African American history and culture.

Collections and programs

The museum shows several exhibitions and holds over 35,000 artifacts and archival materials, among them several collections and a repository of documents on Detroit's labor history. Film series, lectures, book events, workshops, performances and other events bring audiences together with scholars, activists and artists.

And Still We Rise

The permanent exhibition, And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History and Culture, is one of the longest-running exhibitions in the United States devoted to African American history. Its more than 20 galleries trace the resilience of African Americans from Africa, through the Middle Passage, to the Americas, and highlight national figures, many of them leaders of the civil rights movement.

Throughout its collections, exhibitions and programs, The Wright keeps Detroit at the center — the city's part in American history, the civil rights movement included.

In the civil rights network

The museum joined the African American Civil Rights Network in 2023. Created by the African American Civil Rights Act of 2017 and coordinated by the National Park Service, the network recognizes the civil rights movement and the sacrifices of those who fought discrimination and segregation, telling its story through public and private properties, facilities and programs.
