COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) is an illness caused by a virus — a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some become very sick. A COVID-19 vaccine helps protect you.
What the vaccines do
They may help keep you from getting sick at all. And if you do get COVID-19, they lower your risk of:
- needing urgent care or the emergency room;
- severe illness;
- being hospitalised;
- dying;
- getting long COVID.
Stay up to date
It is important to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines. Ask your health care provider if you don't know when you need another dose, or have other questions about the vaccines.
