Health centers are community-based clinics that bring primary care to underserved communities. In 2023, adults visited them far more often for a mental health disorder than for a substance use disorder — a pattern that held for both men and women.

Visits per 1,000 adults
| Visits for | All adults |
|---|---|
| Mental health disorder only | 52.6 |
| Both disorders | 13.3 |
| Substance use disorder only | 9.8 |
Men and women
- Women visited for a mental health disorder at a rate of 73.0 per 1,000 — well above men (30.2).
- For a substance use disorder or both, the two sexes had similar rates.
How the figures were built
| Survey | NCHS's National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, Health Center Component, 2023 |
| Sample | about 100.4 million visits by adults 18 and older |
| Mental health disorder | a visit with an ICD-10-CM code F01–F09 or F20–F99 |
| Substance use disorder | a visit with a code F10–F19 |
| Rates | based on the Census Bureau's July 1, 2023 estimate of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population |
"Mental health disorder only" and "substance use disorder only" don't overlap; visits with codes for both are counted separately. A supplementary table has the full figures, and CDC points readers to its page on caring for mental health.
