2019 Emerging Technologies Workshop

NOAA released a summary report for the 2019 Emerging Technologies Workshop (ETW). The report consists of an overview of the materials presented during the 2019 ETW as well as key insights on workshop successes, challenges and next steps to grow and sustain the event.

NOAA’s Emerging Technologies Workshop served as one of NOAA’s many avenues to achieve and sustain an observing systems portfolio that is mission-effective, technologically integrated, adaptable, and affordable. Workshop discussions demonstrated how the public and private sectors are working to revolutionize current methodologies for generating actionable intelligence from the vast amount of available environmental observations. NOAA will continue to grow future workshops to improve public-private partnerships, encourage collaboration, and better serve all aspects of NOAA’s diverse mission.

Workshop capabilities ranged from novel applications of artificial intelligence to enhance the development of satellite data products, to airborne sensors with the potential to improve forecasting of severe storms. The workshop concluded with a panel where NOAA leaders discussed challenges of transitioning technologies from research to operations and what can be done to prevent such barriers.

ETW session chairs selected the workshop’s highlighted capabilities from both an RFI submissions as well as a NOAA-internal submission process. To sign up to be informed about opportunities to engage in the next ETW, including submitting to the next RFI, email etw.logistics@noaa.gov.
