"The path to equality has been anything but smooth." The park's own opening
line is the argument it exists to make.
Brown v. Board of Education is remembered as a decision — a date, a court, a
ruling. This place is about the people who produced it: **parents, teachers,
secretaries, welders, ministers and students**, coming together for a common
goal, who **drove their communities, and the country along with them, toward
justice in a series of often unsteady turns** leading to the decision.
"Unsteady turns" is doing real work in that sentence. The road to Brown was
not a campaign that advanced; it was decades of local effort that gained and
lost ground, mostly conducted by people with ordinary jobs.
Where it is
The park is in downtown Topeka, Kansas, at 1515 SE Monroe Street — the
Monroe Elementary School building itself, one of the segregated schools the
case was about.
The weather
Kansas has a temperate but continental climate: great extremes between
summer and winter temperatures, but **few long periods of extreme heat or
cold**.
