Two in five people over 85 are cared for at home by someone they know

Flat through middle age, then rising — and more than doubling between 75–84
and 85-plus.

What the number is describing

**Two in five people over 85 are being looked after at home by somebody they
know.** Not a care home, not a visiting professional — a daughter, a spouse, a
neighbour.

That is a workforce larger than most healthcare professions, and it appears in
no payroll, no training requirement, no staffing ratio and no capacity plan.
When policy discusses care for the very old, it counts beds and home care
hours; this row is the part already being covered by people doing it for free.

The doubling also marks where it becomes the normal experience rather than an
exception. Below 85, being cared for by a relative is a minority situation.
Above it, it is close to half.

What counts as "care"

**"During the past 12 months, did you receive care at home from a friend or
family member?"**

The definition of care was left up to the respondent, though an interviewer
could clarify, if asked, that it **encompasses a wide range of activities with
which a person might need help, including personal and household tasks.**

Deliberately broad — and worth knowing when reading the figure. It includes
somebody who does the shopping once a week and somebody who washes and dresses
another person every day. The 39.8% is the count of people receiving some
help, not a measure of how much.

Which cuts both ways. It probably overstates intensive care needs, and it
almost certainly understates the total burden, because a respondent who thinks
of their daughter's help as "just family" may answer no.
