The United States and Mexico share a long, dynamic history of social, cultural and economic ties, which has created binational communities of people living throughout both countries. That brings unique challenges — and opportunities — for stopping the spread of infectious diseases, and public health agencies in both countries work together on them.

Map of the U.S.–Mexico border region, with circular arrows for local movement along the border and long arrows for travel between parts of Mexico and the United States

The U.S.–Mexico border region: land within 62 miles (100 km) north and south of the 2,000-mile (3,218 km) boundary. Circular arrows show regular local movement within the region; long arrows, movement between Mexico and areas across the United States. CDC

Two terms

  • Border health — the health consequences, issues and risks for people who live in or pass through the border region, including those from cross-border connections: personal contact, travel or migration, and exposure to products or environmental conditions from the neighbouring country.
  • Binational health — the same for communities throughout both countries that have close social ties to, travel between, and use products from both.

By the numbers

Northbound crossings at official land ports of entry, 2023187.8 million
Travelers, 202329.5 million from the United States to Mexico; 16.1 million from Mexico to the United States. Mexico is a top foreign destination for U.S. travelers; the United States is the main destination for Mexican travelers
Border region population, 20208 million on the U.S. side; 8.8 million on the Mexican side
U.S. citizens living in Mexico, 2020799,000 — Mexico is the top country of residence for U.S.-born people living abroad
People born in Mexico living in the United States, 202110.7 million
People of Mexican heritage in the United States, 202237.4 million, many born in the United States
Seasonal workers from Mexico, 2021about 560,000 in agriculture and almost 100,000 in other work
Agricultural trade, 2021Mexico, the largest U.S. agricultural trading partner (exports and imports combined), took 15.5% of U.S. farm exports and supplied 22.3% of imports

What CDC does

CDC's Division of Global Migration Health, through its Southern Border Health and Migration Branch, works with local, state and federal health officials in both countries to prevent, detect and respond to infectious diseases affecting the border region, binational populations and other mobile populations.
