Botulism is a rare but serious disease, and most people go through life without ever getting it. But certain actions increase the risk.

| Drinking certain homemade alcohol, such as the "pruno" or "hooch" made in prisons | foodborne botulism |
| Eating improperly canned, preserved or fermented food — most often home-canned foods and Alaska Native foods | foodborne botulism |
| Being injected with too high a dose of botulinum toxin | iatrogenic botulism |
Among people who have botulinum toxin injections for medical or cosmetic reasons, those at increased risk include:
- children;
- people who weigh less than a typical adult;
- people with an underlying nerve or muscle problem.
