When you breathe in, air travels down your trachea (windpipe) and then through two tubes into the lungs. These tubes are the bronchi, and disorders of them can make it hard to breathe.

The most common problem

Bronchitis — inflammation of the bronchi — which can be acute or chronic.

Other bronchial disorders

DisorderWhat happens
Bronchiectasisdamage makes the airways widen and become flabby and scarred
Exercise-induced bronchospasmthe airways narrow during exercise, making breathing hard
Bronchiolitisinflammation of the small airways that branch off the bronchi
Bronchopulmonary dysplasiaa chronic lung condition in infants, most often premature babies
