Floods are common in the United States.

What causes them

Weatherheavy rain, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis
Water escaping its boundsa river or stream overflowing its banks, a breached levee, a broken dam

Flash floods can develop fast, often as a dangerous wall of roaring water carrying rocks, mud and debris that can sweep away most things in its path.

Who is at risk

Be aware of flood hazards wherever you live — and especially if your home is in a low-lying area, near water, or downstream from a dam.

What you can do

Nothing guarantees safety in a flood, but you can take steps to protect yourself, starting with a disaster plan. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses.

Afterward

If you live through a disaster, feeling stressed is normal, and you may need help finding ways to cope.
