Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes itchy or sore patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales — usually on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, though they can appear anywhere.
Psoriatic arthritis
Some people with psoriasis also get psoriatic arthritis, which causes:
- pain
- stiffness
- swelling of the joints
It's often mild, but can be serious and affect many joints. The joint and skin problems don't always flare at the same time.
Diagnosis
Your doctor will do a physical exam and imaging tests.
Treatment
There's no cure, but medicines can control inflammation and pain. In rare cases, surgery may be needed to repair or replace damaged joints.
