Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perception. A person with psychosis loses touch with reality. Two of the main symptoms are:
- delusions, false beliefs, such as thinking someone is plotting against you or that the television is sending you secret messages;
- hallucinations, false perceptions, such as hearing, seeing or feeling something that is not there.
Causes
Schizophrenia is one type of psychotic disorder, and people with bipolar disorder may also have psychotic symptoms. Psychosis can also be caused by alcohol and some drugs, brain tumours, brain infections and stroke.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause. It may include medicines to control symptoms, and talk therapy. In serious cases, where a person might be a danger to themselves or others, hospital care is an option.
