A scar is a permanent patch of skin that grows over a wound as the body heals it. Scars can follow a cut, scrape, burn or sore, surgery that cuts through the skin, infections such as chickenpox, or skin conditions such as acne.
Scar tissue often looks different from the skin around it: thicker, and pinker, redder or shinier.
What decides how a scar looks
- how big and deep the wound was
- where on the body it is
- how long it takes to heal
- your age
- your inherited tendency to scar
Will it go away?
Scars usually fade over time, but they never disappear completely.
Treatments
If the way a scar looks bothers you, several treatments may make it less noticeable:
- surgical revision
- dermabrasion
- laser treatments
- injections
- chemical peels
- creams
