Swine Flu (H1N1): Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus named for one that pigs can get. People do not normally catch swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. In 2009, a strain called H1N1 infected many people around the world.

How it spreads and what it does

The virus is contagious and can pass from person to person. In people, its symptoms are like those of ordinary flu:

• fever;
• cough;
• sore throat;
• body aches;
• headache;
• chills;
• fatigue.

Treatment and vaccine

Antiviral medicines can prevent or treat swine flu, and a vaccine protects against it.

Stopping the spread

You can help stop the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses such as flu:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue away afterwards.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth; germs spread that way.
• Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home from work or school if you are sick.
