Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can cause sores in the genital or rectal area, buttocks and thighs.
How it spreads
- Vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has it.
- Even without sores: the virus can spread when none are present.
- At birth: mothers can infect their babies during childbirth.
Outbreaks
Symptoms come as outbreaks:
- sores usually appear near where the virus entered the body;
- they are blisters that break, become painful, then heal.
Some people don't know they have herpes, because they have no or very mild symptoms. It can be more serious in newborns and people with weak immune systems.
Repeat outbreaks are common, especially in the first year; over time they come less often and are milder. The virus stays in your body for life.
Diagnosis and treatment
- Tests can diagnose it.
- There is no cure, but medicines can ease symptoms, mean fewer outbreaks, and lower the risk of passing it on.
Prevention
- Latex condoms, used correctly, reduce but don't eliminate the risk. With a latex allergy, use polyurethane condoms.
- The most reliable way to avoid infection is not to have anal, vaginal or oral sex.
