What it is
Organ donation takes healthy organs and tissues from one person and transplants them into another. Experts say one donor's organs can save or help as many as 50 people.
What can be donated
- internal organs — kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines and lungs;
- skin;
- bone and bone marrow;
- the cornea.
Most donations happen after the donor's death, but some organs and tissues can be given by a living donor.
Who can donate
People of every age and background can be donors.
- Under 18: a parent or guardian must give permission.
- 18 or older: sign a donor card to show you want to donate.
- Either way: tell your family your wishes.
