Tuberous sclerosis is a rare genetic disease that causes benign (non-cancerous) tumours to grow in the brain and other organs.
Symptoms
They depend on where the tumours grow, and can include:
- skin problems, such as pale patches and thickened skin;
- seizures;
- behaviour problems;
- intellectual disability;
- kidney problems.
Course
Some people show signs at birth; in others, symptoms take time to develop. The disease can be mild or can cause severe disability, and in rare cases tumours in vital organs, or other symptoms, can be life-threatening.
Treatment
There is no cure, but treatment can ease symptoms. Options include:
- medicines;
- educational and occupational therapy;
- surgery, including surgery for specific complications.
