Most teenage girls do not plan to get pregnant, but many do. A teen pregnancy carries extra health risks for both the mother and the baby.
Risks
For the mother:
- Teens often start prenatal care too late, which can lead to problems later in the pregnancy.
- They have a higher risk of high blood pressure caused by pregnancy, and of its complications.
For the baby:
- premature birth;
- low birth weight.
What a pregnant teen can do
If you are a pregnant teen, you can help yourself and your baby by:
- getting regular prenatal care;
- taking prenatal vitamins, for your own health and to help prevent some birth defects;
- avoiding smoking, alcohol and drugs;
- using a condom if you are having sex, to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that could harm your baby. If you or your partner is allergic to latex, polyurethane condoms can be used instead.
